Concerned residents of the GBR tell their story

Jul 11, 2013A

Cheryl Watson is a Gladstone resident who has been fighting to raise awareness of about impact of industrialisation on the Great Barrier Reef.

She has worked tirelessly to save the Reef for her grandchildren and generations to come.

And she’s become quite well known for it – even being referred to as Cheryl ‘bloody’ Watson.

That’s why she’s agreed to feature in this video of local residents telling the story of their personal fight for the Reef.

“The Great Barrier Reef is one of a kind – the thought of it being destroyed breaks my heart,” Cheryl says.

“I know Australians care about the Reef. In our busy lives the environment tends to fall to the back of our minds, as an old saying goes ‘you don’t know what you have until you lose it’.”

“The natural values it has as well as the economic benefits cannot be over-stated.”
